PEM electrolysis:

Pushing towards significant improvements reaching extended performance and lifetime

PEMPIRE is an EU-funded project developing next-generation proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers for clean and efficient hydrogen production.

The project addresses key challenges hindering large-scale deployment, including high costs, reliance on critical raw materials, and limited durability. By advancing low-precious‑metal materials, optimised components, and scalable system designs, PEMPIRE aims to deliver cost-effective, durable and environmentally sustainable PEM electrolysers. Combining experimental research, modelling and life‑cycle assessment, the project supports reliable hydrogen production and contributes to the EU’s climate neutrality and clean energy transition.
